The history and development of school

The initiative for founding a professional study programme in the area of technology and engineering was launched by the Economic Council of the Town of Bjelovar in the scope of creating the Strategy of the Economic Development of the Town of Bjelovar 2006-2011, which had determined the need for raising the educational structure of the population to a higher level, especially in the area of technical sciences.

Based on this initiative, on 5th September 2006 the Town Government passed the decision on initiating the procedure of founding a professional study programme in the area of technical sciences, and the operative activities were carried out by the town development agency Poslovni park Bjelovar d.o.o.

The first presentation and discussion related to the suggested Mechatronics curriculum with interested parties from the private and public sector took place on 28th November 2006.

The next step involved analyses, drafting documentation and working out the curriculum. The Town Council of the Town of Bjelovar at its 13th session held on 24th April 2007 passed the Decision on founding Technical College in Bjelovar, and on 6th July 2007 it appointed Ante Čikić, PhD to the duty of the acting dean of the Technical College in Bjelovar. On 18th February 2008 the Ministry of Science, Education and Sports awarded Technical College in Bjelovar with the Permit for the Professional Programme of Study in Mechatronics, under the condition that within the period of five years the institution proportionally employs teaching staff until reaching the required number. This day was declared as the Day of the Technical College in Bjelovar.

Upon obtaining the Permit, the activities related to structuring the new institution were initiated. The Statute was made, and on 10th April 2008 it was adopted by the Town Council of the Town of Bjelovar.

As services and the Registrar’s Office had not yet been set up, the enrollment of the first generation of students was operatively managed by the town development agency Poslovni park Bjelovar d.o.o., which for the purpose of informing graduating pupils prepared and issued the first brochure Studying in Bjelovar that included complete information on study programmes offered in Bjelovar, as well as on scholarships and student loans.

At the same time, the management bodies of the Technical College in Bjelovar were appointed. On its 19th session held on 29th May 2008 the Town Council of the Town of Bjelovar passed the Decision on appointing the members of the Steering Committee of the Technical College in Bjelovar.

Upon founding the Technical College in Bjelovar, obtaining the Permit for the Professional Programme of Study in Mechatronics, completing the competition and enrolment procedure, classes for the first generation of Mechatronics students (47 full-time and 58 part-time students) started on 6th October 2008. After the project of founding Technical College in Bjelovar had been successfully completed, the Permit for the Professional Programme of Study in Mechatronics attained and the enrolment of the first generation of students completed, on 25th July 2008 the Town Government passed the Decision on initiating the procedure of founding the Professional Programme of Study in Nursing. The Ministry of Science, Education and Sports issued the Permit for the Professional Programme of Study in Nursing on 15th October 2009, under the condition that within the period of five years the institution proportionally employed teaching staff up to the required number. The first generation of part-time students started their studies on 21st November 2009.

The head office of the Technical College in Bjelovar was initially located in Bjelovar, Antuna Branka Šimića 1, where classes were held as well. In February 2009 the Town Council passed the decision on the long-term lease of the building located in the town centre (Trg Eugena Kvaternika 4) to the Technical College in Bjelovar against a symbolic fee. The building was reconstructed, adapted and equipped, after which on 5th March 2010 classes were organized in it and the head office of the Technical College in Bjelovar was moved to the new address.

On its session held on 9th February 2010 the Steering Committee of the Technical College in Bjelovar passed the Decision on initiating and founding the Student Entrepreneurship-Technology Incubator, where students and their mentors have achieved significant results at Croatian and international innovation exhibitions.

As Technical College in Bjelovar developed, the factors related to the quality assurance in higher education required further increase in spatial capacities. On 24th September 2012 the Town Council of the Town of Bjelovar passed the decision on leasing additional 1,331.52m2 of spatial capacities in Building 2, Antuna Branka Šimića 1, to the Technical College in Bjelovar without a fee.

During 2012 the Professional Programme of Study in Nursing completed the process of thematic evaluation, while the institution and both programmes of study completed the reaccreditation process in the academic year 2012/2013. The Development Strategy of the Technical College in Bjelovar for the period 2012-2016 was made and adopted, and the institution implemented the quality management system ISO 9001:2008.

During 2014 the reconstruction of the attic in Antuna Branka Šimića 1 was completed.

On 13th March 2013 the Ministry awarded the unconditional Permit to the Technical College in Bjelovar for the undergraduate professional programme of study in Mechatronics, and on 17th February 2015 for the undergraduate programme of study in Nursing.

For the purpose of achieving compliance of the curriculum of the undergraduate professional programme of study in nursing with the EU Directives, from 1st October 2014 Technical College in Bjelovar has implemented a new, modern curriculum that is in full compliance with international standards.

After the re-accreditation process Technical College in Bjelovar has continued improving the student standard. On 22nd January 2015 the National Committee for Student Meals Control passed the conclusion on the implementation of the public call for bids for offering the service of subsidized student meals in Bjelovar. Since 18th May 2015 our students use the service of subsidized student meals based on their student rights and the X-card.

During 2016 the curriculum amendments report was made for the undergraduate professional programme of study in mechatronics. Since 1st October 2016 Technical College in Bjelovar has been offering a study programme in mechatronics that is fully adapted to contemporary demands in this profession. New courses have been introduced, the existing courses have been updated and the percentage of practical sessions and professional practice has been increased.
